Bio/Info
I often wonder if a love of photography is genetic. Playful images taken by both sides of my family go back to the 1850s. My own love of taking pictures began as a boy when I would spend evenings with my father in his darkroom. The magic of a print appearing in an amber lit tray still fascinates me. In college I spent my last $ 150 on a used Canon FTb and 5 rolls of Kodachrome and I have never stopped shooting. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a fine art degree I had the good fortune to be taken under the wing of a freelance photographer who drove a sports car, lived in a cottage by the river, had a pretty girlfriend and made a living with his camera. It was a lifestyle that I saw the merits of immediately and I have never regretted my choice to have a professional life based in creativity and independence.
My first assignments in the highly creative, advertising town of Richmond, VA taught me that I could have a great time taking photographs and people would actually pay me to do it!
Ten years of shooting advertising and annual reports in New York City honed my lighting skills and allowed me to compete for assignments (and taxis) in the most competitive market on the planet.
Fifteen years in the Hudson Highlands showed me that it was possible to have a great “on location” career, an international stock photography business and a family anywhere I wanted.
And now life in the Berkshires of Massachusetts is offering up more culture than I can possibly take advantage of and clients that hire me to do what I have always done best. They ask me to come to their location and “find” the images that will tell the story of who they are. There are no layouts, only opportunities. So you see, I did choose wisely.
